How to Size Water Meters

a Water meter is a device that measures the volume of water usage. Measurement is typically made in cubic feet, cubic meters or US gallons. A Water meter is commonly supplied by the Water meter and comes in various sizes, depending on the needs of the customer or homeowner. The fastest way of sizing water meters is by using free water-meter-sizing software that you can access via the Internet.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Water-meter-sizing software
  1. 1

Walk around your house and write down all the plumbing fixtures that use water, together with the quantity of each fixture. Clothes washer, dishwasher, kitchen sink, shower and water closet or toilet are examples of such plumbing fixtures.

  2. 2

Open your Internet browser and visit websites that offer free access to a water-meter-sizing software program. Websites such as Size-It, City of Airway Heights, and Portland Water Bureau (see Resources) are websites that offer this type of service.

  3. 3

Navigate to the website and view the homepage. Download and install the program if needed. Some websites will require you to download the software program while others immediately present the program interface in their website's homepage.

  4. 4

View the program interface and enter the required information in the spaces provided. Water-meter-sizing calculations generally take into consideration the number of plumbing fixtures that dispense or consume water. Use the list you made in Step 1 when entering the information into the program interface.

  5. 5

Press the "Calculate" button typically found at the bottom of the interface. View the resulting water meter size at the bottom of the program.
