How to Seal a Water Meter

Water meters are used to measure the volume of your water usage. If your water meter is located outside of your household and you are worried that someone is tampering with it, one of the best ways to protect it is to use a tamper-proof seal. Although security seals come in a variety of different sizes and styles, one of the simplest seals is a twist seal, which allows you to thread a wire through the plastic head, twist it closed and snap off the handle for security.

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Twist seal 1
  1. Stand in front of your water meter with your roll of wire. Carefully wrap the wire around the water meter to roughly measure how long it should be.

  2. 2

Cut the wire 3 inches longer than the rough measurement you took, using wire cutters. This will allow you to thread the wire easily through the twist seal and give you enough room to allow for error.

  3. 3

Holding the twist seal in one hand, wrap the wire around the water meter. Thread the ends of the wire through the twist seal. Continue to push both wire ends through the twist seal until the wire is tight around the water meter.

  4. 4

Twist the plastic handle of the twist seal clockwise to tighten the seal until you can't tighten it any more.

  5. 5

Snap off the plastic handle of the twist seal.
